Pigmentation

Pigmentation refers to the natural coloring of the skin, determined by the production of melanin, a pigment created by specialized cells called melanocytes. When melanin production is disrupted, it can lead to an uneven skin tone of the appearance of dark or light patches on the skin. These irregularities, collectively known as pigmentation disorders, can affect small areas, large regions, or, in some cases, the entire body.

Types of pigmentation issues may include:

1. Hyperpigmentation

Characterized by darkened patches or spots caused by an overproduction of melanin. Common forms include:

  • Melasma - brown or gray-brown patches, often triggered by hormonal changes, pregnancy, or sun exposure.

  • Sunspots - caused by prolonged UV exposure, often appearing on areas like the face, hands, or shoulders.

  • Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation - dark marks left behind after an injury, acne, or skin inflammation.

2. Hypopigmentation

Occurs when melanin production decreases, leading to lighter patches on the skin.

3. General Pigmentation Disorder

Conditions like freckles or age spots that results from a combination of genetic factors and environment triggers.

Pigmentation can be caused by various factors, including prolonged sun exposure, hormonal changes, skin trauma and aging.
